Description
Project Lead the Way Biomedical Sciences gives students a glimpse into the world of biomedicine through computer-based and hands-on activities and projects. This dynamic program uses hands-on, real world problems to engage and challenge students. This program is composed three, 5.0 GPA, college level classes and one honors class designed for students who have career interests in the biological sciences, medical research, and biotechnology. Students have earned as much as 16 college credits of biomedical science from this program (which they then transferred to the University of Maryland). The CCCTC Biomedical Sciences program was one of sixteen schools in the nation to be named a PLTW Model School.
Major Topics
Principles of the Biomedical Sciences (PBS)
Students investigate various health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, hypercholesterolemia, and infectious diseases. They determine the factors that led to the death of a fictional person, and investigate lifestyle choices and medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, medicine, and research processes.
Human Body Systems (HBS)
Students examine the interactions of human body systems as they explore identity, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis. Students design experiments, investigate the structures and functions of the human body, and use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration. Exploring science in action, students build organs and tissues on a skeletal manikin, work through interesting real world cases and often play the roles of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries.
Medical Interventions (MI)
Students investigate a variety of interventions involved in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease as they follow the life of a fictitious family. Students explore how to prevent and fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; prevent, diagnose and treat cancer; and use molecular biology techniques to treat disease. Through these scenarios, students are exposed to a range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics.
Biomedical Innovation (BI)
Students design innovative solutions by working through progressively challenging open-ended problems, addressing topics such as clinical medicine, physiology, biomedical engineering, and public health. They have the opportunity to work on a research project where a portion of a glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) gene from plants is cloned, inserted into a plasmid vector, and the sequence analyzed through bioinformatics. This project offers the students the opportunity to perform novel research using a wide range of lab techniques and to publish their sequencing and bioinformatic results in National Center for Biotechnology Information's (NCBI’s) GenBank. At the end of the project, students are expected to write a scientific paper and present their work to an audience of STEM professionals in the form of a scientific poster.

Description
Nursing(Honors)
This honors/college level program is designed to provide students the information needed to provide basic patient care, their role as part of the healthcare team, disease processes, and infection control and safety issues. In the first semester, students will assume the role of the CNA in a long-term care facility under the supervision of an instructor where the student will build upon the skills and knowledge learned in the classroom by providing hands-on care to residents/patients. Classroom and clinical portions of this course meet all requirements to be eligible for CNA certification in Maryland and prepares students for the Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) exam and national certification.
In the second semester of the student's senior year, certified nursing students will be placed in a specialized intrnships according to interests and qualifications. Some of those placements MIGHT include:
Internship leading to Certified Clinical Medical Assistant: This internship is designed to train the student in many routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep physician, podiatry, urgent care and other health practitioner offices running smoothly. Administrative topics include appointment scheduling, coding, billing and records management. Clinical topics include safety and infection control, assessment and examination procedures, assisting with medications, assisting the practitioner with treatments/minor procedures, laboratory skills including phlebotomy, EKG recording and interpretation, and patient education techniques. Course includes theory and clinical components. Upon successful completion of classroom and clinic components, students are eligible to take the CCMA certification exam through National Healthcareer Association.
Internship in Patient Care Technician: This internship is designed to teach students advanced patient care skills such as wound care, IV therapy, electrocardiogram recording and interpretation and phlebotomy. This course has an internship component in the acute care setting, Carroll Hospital Center. The internship is a system of learning that links students, schools, and workplaces to provide students with meaningful credentials, experiences and skills that prepare them for their transition to further education, careers and adulthood.
The GNA Internship: This internship links students, schools, and workplaces to provide students with meaningful credentials, experiences and skills that prepare them for their transition to further education and careers in geriatic care. Description
Nursing Assistant (Academic)
The goal of this academic level program is to obtain certification through the Maryland Board of Nursing as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Geriatric Nursing Assistant in order to enter the workforce in a nursing home, assisted living facility, or home health agency. Applicants should be interested in a frontline job in healthcare as a certified nursing assistant upon high school graduation.
NOTE
The student's placement in the second semester of the program will either be a senior living facility or long-term health facility.
Reason: There is an extreme shortage of Certified Nursing Assistance in the Senior Living Facilities/Long term care businesses. Focus will be to get students certified, graduated, and go to work in the county senior living facilities/long-term care businesses.
What you need to know
- The NEW Career Nursing Assistant program is for Academic level students looking for a career right after graduation.
- Prerequisite: Biology (academic level)
- 6 credits (Schedule is like CCCTC traditional programs: Junior year spring (3) and Senior year fall (3))
- Transport for junior year CNA class provided Clinical
- Internship placements ONLY at a senior living facility/long turn care businesses (parents will need to provide transportation
